autocom is an open-source open vehicle communication software. The Autocom 2013 is the latest release of this popular communication software for vehicles, at the time of writing there are 8 versions released. The Autocom client helps to distribute communication in vehicles in a variety of ways, e.g it can start with broadcasting short messages in any direction and then use one or more modes to communicate with other vehicles that are close by. The software development started in year 2003 and it is an old project, but still has a strong community and support. However Autocom needs the help from users if they wish to have a good product since majority of the programmers involved are volunteers. The source code is available to all those who need it which adds value to the project as anyone interested could contribute as well as see how things work. The gateway software has been modified for users that also want to extend it. The main functions provided by the current version of Autocom are:
By using this method, all vehicles reading a message can decide whether or not they should keep a copy for themselves or pass the information onto other vehicles close by. The reading vehicles do not need to know who sent the message, nor do they need to act on the information. The communication is still local, but it could be used for communication between vehicles that are quite far away. Basically, ACP (Automatic Channel Protection) is a method used for communication between vehicles to avoid collisions caused by them transmitting at the same time. ACP can be placed in two types; one that protects vehicle to vehicle communication and another that protects vehicle to gateway communication. Usually ACP is enabled when an Autocom network starts up, however it can be disabled if necessary. This method of communication is similar to how mobile phones communicate. This method can be used in all Autocom versions for communication between vehicles. This is the preferred way of communication over Autocom since it allows users to be selective, meaning that they can choose who they want to communicate with. The gateway software is required here in order for this type of communication to function. The advantage of this method of communication is that all vehicles are able to communicate together, however this should only be used when there are enough vehicles present in a group. Communicating with other vehicles requires one common language so knowing random sentences is not possible. Languages should be chosen before the network starts up so that the gateway software has enough information about the surroundings in order to make accurate decisions about sending out messages for particular groups. For example, in a classroom there could be a certain language for teacher to communicate with pupils, so that pupils can ignore messages that are not meant for them. This mode of communication is similar to V2V, but without the use of gateway software. Anything transmitted via this method gets broadcast into the general Autocom group. This means that anyone could read or listen into messages being sent out. One disadvantage about this method is that it uses public data channels in order to make connections with other vehicles, which requires users to have already received information regarding which channels are currently free to use.
